Opening Lines
 

"Power Quality" - words that either mean absolutely nothing,
or are absolutely vital to you.

'Power Quality' is still a foreign concept to some, attracting little interest through limited understanding. Yet it is synonymous with 'Reliability' - a concept dear to most hearts. Said another way; Although hi-tech equipment has been around a while, the importance of power quality as a measure of total system reliability still appears to be a new concept for many. Electrically powered equipment is only as reliable as the power that feeds it.

In today's world, as more and more technology is unleashed in both home and workplace, more demand is placed on the power networks. Yet as more technology is used, more interference is introduced within the networks affecting both the networks and the technology. Often technology is employed to combat the problems (e.g. UPS units) but they in turn have their own issues, including causing interference within the networks. Kind of a vicious circle!

But is it really fair to blame the increased use of technology? Is it not possibly just a mere case of bad implementation? In this e-book we begin with recognizing the symptoms of bad power quality, causes of the symptoms, methods of tracing sources of interference, and conclude with solutions to minimise or eliminate them.

There does appear to be a growing trend in the belief in the need to consider power quality. Ever since this e-book began, I've become aware of the growing number involved in power quality. What's frightening is it is folk already offering PQ services who are reading this book which makes me wonder what have they been telling their clients till now!?

I say this in light of my writing this book was prompted after reading a few power quality training manuals and found many areas within them either lacking in completeness, or just simply incorrect. And the more I look around, the more I unearth bad teaching; Especially by some (so-called) professionals within the industry who should know better!

The approach is from an electronics point of view rather than a power engineering one. This is proving to be a world-leading outlook on this subject substantiated by the fact that more and more trainers are using this material as a reference in their courses bestowing a huge honour on me in the process!

This book is being written over time (most is written on the train to and from clients, the remainder in spare time). The advantages of 'e' vs 'hardback' books is they don't have to be written in full for people to appreciate their contents, together with the fact they don't have to be written in sequence (questions are guiding which sections get written when).

e-Books are also open to modification and correction so should you be printing this out it is strongly suggested you do so section by section, and use a file rather than a binder. This flexibility also allows us to be open to, and in fact welcome, suggestions. Please email any comments you may have and don't be shy to ask questions as this will help guide what is really important out there.

And finally; This e-book has no financial backing whatsoever (and fret not, I don't want any either), and not getting money to produce it means the information in this book is free. However, being free-published does not make the information any less worthy (there is this weird concept that only information paid for is it worth something!). In fact, if you have not yet involved expensive 'contracting consultants' (the guys who ask for shed-loads of money simply to get guys like me to do the work!), the value-for-money ratio is priceless.
