SOLUTIONS:
Creating High Impedance Paths
Using Inductors

The fact that inductors are "frequency dependent resistors" can be put to extremely good use in protecting any circuitry sensitive to transients.

This makes them excellent for systems with direct input rectifiers (no transformer). The fact the diodes conduct for only a small portion of the cycle, inductors can be used to 1 - increase the conduction phase thereby significantly decreasing the peak to average ratio and 2 - limit any current due to sudden increases in voltage during the conduction phase. If this solution is widely used then a small amount of power factor correction will need to be implemented.
